Before buying Australian Cattle Dogs pay careful attention to the breeder. The reputable breeder always makes a contribution to the betterment of the breed and selects only a few puppies each year. He not only looks for fine conformation according to the ANKC standard, but also considers stability of temperament, working ability, and soundness.

All dogs should be tested annually for PRA, BAER hearing, and hip dysplasia. Breeders should take care of feeding the dogs biologically appropriate raw food and exercising of growing puppies. Before a puppy leaves the breeder's care it must be given a well-rounded socialization. But it's necessary that new owners train and socialize the dog throughout its life. If you are unable to make such a commitment, the Australian Cattle Dog is not the breed for you.

As a working breed the Australian Cattle Dog needs a lot of exercises and mental stimulation. If not given appropriate direction it can become aggressive. Obedience training is essential, positive methods, such as Clicker Training work better.

Australian Cattle Dogs - Diet

The basic principle of feeding Australian Cattle Dogs is: 70-80% raw meaty bones with fruit and vegetables. In feeding you should bear in mind what these dogs were designed to eat. There is no need for intricate weighing and measuring - just look at the condition of your Australian Cattle Dogs, judge their weight and activity level and feed accordingly.
