Australian Cattles - Dogs - Housing

Typical Australian Cattle Dogs require little grooming and coat maintenance. They don't shed year round, but blow their coat once or twice per year. During this 2-3 week period the dog sheds the undercoat in massive clumps. Intact females blow the coat after each heat cycle, altered animals shed once a year. Frequent brushing and warm baths can lessen the shedding. The proper coat remains healthy with good nutrition and regular brushing.

The feet of the Australian Cattle Dog are the most important consideration. To maintain their strength, nails should be kept short, pads regularly inspected for cuts or bruises. Ears should be kept clean as well. If you want to show the dog, it needs special grooming.
Weight: 35-50 pounds (14-23 kg).
Height: 17-20 inches (43-50 cm) at the withers.

The only common hereditary eye problem is progressive retinal atrophy. Other eye diseases are easily detected in a slit lamp exam at a young age, but PRA cannot be detected until 5-6 years and can cause blindness of older dogs. Another genetic problem is inherited deafness. So, while buying a puppy, check to see if there is a CERF registration for both of the parents. Australian Cattle Dogs are subject to hip dysplasia, but the problem isn't noticeable until old age.
