The coat of Australian Cattle Dogs is smooth, with a dense undercoat. Each hair of the outer coat is straight, hard, and lying flat, so it's rain resistant. Under the body the coat is longer and forms near the thigh a form of breeching. Along the neck it's longer and thicker, and on the head and feet it's shorter. The length of the coat averages 1-1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm). The color of the Australian Cattle Dog can be blue, mottled-blue, or blue speckled with or without markings. The permissible markings on the coat are black, blue or tan. Black markings on the body are not desirable. The undercoat may be tan providing it doesn't show through the blue outer coat.

An Australian Cattle Dog's head is strong and broad, slightly curved between the ears. The cheeks are muscular, with the strong, prominent, and deep underjaw. The foreface is broad and well filled in under the eyes. The nose should be black. A purebred Australian Cattle Dog has oval dark brown eyes expressing alertness and intelligence. The ears should be of moderate size, set wide apart, moderately pointed, muscular, and broad at the base. Sound and strong teeth with a scissor-bite are important in Australian Cattle Dogs for moving difficult cattle by heeling or biting.
